Registration Opens for 2004 Summer Youth Employment Program
(Washington, DC) Today, the Department of Employment Services (DOES) announced that District of Columbia youth can register for the 2004 Passport-to-Work Summer Youth Employment Program. Registration began Monday, March 1 and will end Friday, April 30.
“Summer employment provides youth with an excellent opportunity to learn more about career opportunities in the District of Columbia,” said DOES Director Gregg Irish. “The five-week summer program offers job readiness and leadership training, as well as temporary employment for thousands of youth, while they also learn the responsibility of earning and managing a salary.”
The summer program will operate from July 12th through August 13th and is expected to serve 5000 youth, ages 14 to 21, in subsidized employment and job readiness training. Additionally, youth will be referred to jobs with the District government and non-profit organizations, where they can earn a minimum of $5.15 an hour working 20-30 hours per week, based on their age. Youth who compete for positions in the private and federal sectors of the summer program can earn up to $12 an hour working between 20 and 40 hours weekly.
To register, youth must bring documentation to verify their date of birth, citizenship or alien status, selective service status (for males 18 to 21 years old), social security number, District residency, and family income. The documentation used to verify the youth’s residency must include the youth’s name and address.
Registration is held at the Office of Youth Programs, located at 625 H Street, NE, Washington, DC, Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday, 9 am to 4:30 pm, and Wednesday from 9 am to 6 pm.
