DOES and CVS/pharmacy Rededicate Unique and Successful Partnership

Over 2,000 DC Residents Benefit from Joint Effort

(Washington, DC) The Department of Employment Services and CVS/pharmacy commemorated their six-year partnership and joint opening of the South Capitol One-Stop Career Center and the CVS Regional Learning Center today with a rededication ceremony, reception and community open house. The event was held at the center, located at 4049 South Capitol Street in southwest DC, from 10 am to 1 pm. Guest speaker Stedman Graham also conducted a leadership workshop for area youths titled, "Teens Can Make it Happen."

The event marks a successful six-year public-private sector collaboration that has provided employment and training to over 2000 District residents. The District’s South Capitol Street One-Stop Career Center was the first one-stop center to co-locate with a CVS Regional Learning Center. Set up like a typical CVS/pharmacy store, the facility allows participants to learn all aspects of managing and maintaining the store under the tutelage of an experienced job trainer. This successful national model has been duplicated in six other cities, including BaltimoreAtlanta and Cleveland.

Ebony Harris, a CVS/pharmacy technician apprentice who was trained at the South Capitol Street CVS Regional Learning Center, also spoke at the re-dedication ceremony. Ms. Harris shared how the learning center enabled her to gain the skills she needed to obtain a better job, which in turn has led her to consider other healthcare career options such as becoming a pharmacist.

“CVS/pharmacy is committed to building a strong workforce and strong communities in the cities in which it does business,” said Steve Wing, Director of Government Programs for CVS/pharmacy. “By partnering with One-Stop Career Centers, the company has been able to better recruit and train employees, resulting in higher retention rates for CVS/pharmacy and solid career options for many local residents.”

According to Gregg Irish, director of the Department of Employment Services, the partnership was three years in the making before DOES and CVS/pharmacy co-located the one-stop and learning center into one facility.  CVS is the only large corporation that has made this type of investment east of the Anacostia River.

“It’s very gratifying when a public and private sector partnership benefits our community,” says Director Irish. “DOES has always sought out these types of alliances because we believe that they are formulas for success.”  The re-dedication ceremony also showcased the need for more corporate partnerships that offer jobs and training opportunities for District residents.

The South Capitol Street One Stop Career Center is one of DOES’ seven One-Stop Career Centers strategically located throughout the District of Columbia. The centers assist residents and local businesses with all of their employment needs.
