What is the Grow Your Own Program?
The Grow Your Own (GYO) Program is a workforce initiative created by the DC Department of Employment Services (DOES) that was founded in the Spring of 2013. The program is designed to provide a more streamlined pipeline for qualified DC residents ages 18-24 to compete for entry-level jobs within the District of Columbia Government. Participants would first undergo training before entering into a 25-week subsidized internship experience. The goal of the Grow Your Own Program is to connect interested, eligible residents to opportunities and viable career paths into the DC Government workforce.
When does the Grow Your Own Program run?
The Grow Your Own Program will run from Monday, June 2, 2014 through Friday, November 21, 2014. Participants will be placed with participating agencies/organizations for on-the-job training.
Which agencies are involved?
Currently DOES is partnering with the DC Department of Public Works (DPW), the Office of the Chief Technology Officer (OCTO), the DC Department of Consumer and Regulatory Affairs (DCRA), and the DC Department of Housing and Community Development (DHCD).
What is the compensation?
Compensation will vary from position to position and is based on the following factors: level of education completed, past work history, and the needs of the agency where participants are placed. Participants can work up to 25 hours per week for the 25-week internship experience.
What are the eligibility requirements?
Must be between the ages of 18-24
Must be a DC Resident (proof of residency required)
Must possess either a High School Diploma or G.E.D. Equivalent
Must be able to pass the required clearances
Must be able to provide proof of permission to work in the United States

Interested applicants must submit a resumé and cover letter along with an essay (250 word maximum
) on the following topic: “What makes you an ideal candidate for the ‘Grow Your Own’ Program, and what does this opportunity mean to you?”
