BACKGROUND:  The Sustainable DC Innovation Challenge – part of the Mayor’s Sustainable DC initiative – is a funding competition among District agencies to test and implement cutting-edge sustainability projects. This year, $2.35 million in grants will be awarded to a diverse set of projects to reduce stormwater run-off, provide community greenhouse space, build “aquaponic” fish-and-vegetable farms, restore Oxon Run, and incubate new local food businesses. Seven projects were selected from among 16 proposals. Four District government agencies will take the lead on these efforts to help make the District the greenest, healthiest and most livable city in the nation.
