The RiverSmart Homes program offers a series of rebates when homeowners install their own trees, rain barrels, or rain gardens or remove impervious surfaces from their property. Any District single-family homeowner is eligible to apply for these rebates, even if they have already participated in the RiverSmart Homes program.
District homeowners who purchase and install rain barrels are eligible for a rebate based on the volume of the rain barrel. Rebates are issued as a direct reimbursement calculated at a rate of $1 per gallon stored by the rain barrel or cistern. The minimum volume required is 50 gallons, which would provide a $50 rebate. Rebates may not exceed two barrels and/or $500 total per property. The Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay administers rain barrel rebates on behalf of DDOE. Visit Rain Barrel Rebates for eligibility and application information.
District homeowners who purchase and plant an eligible tree on their property can receive a rebate. The rebate amount varies ($50 or $100) depending on the species of tree planted. Species noted for their large canopy and significant environmental benefits qualify for rebates up to $100 per tree. Casey Trees administers the tree rebate on behalf of DDOE. Visit Casey Trees for the eligible species list and application information.
District homeowners who install landscaping projects that reduce and/or treat stormwater runoff from impervious surfaces on their property are eligible for a rebate. The rebate amount is calculated based on the total square footage of impervious area that is treated as a result of the project (the treatment area). Rebates are issued as a direct reimbursement at a rate of $1.25 per square foot of treatment area. The minimum square footage that must be treated is 400 square feet, which would provide a $500 rebate. The maximum rebate is $1,200. The Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay administers the landscaping rebate on behalf of DDOE. Visit Landscaping Rebates to review the Homeowner Guide and Rebate Application.
