The Mayor’s Opportunity Scholarship

Program Description

The Honorable Mayor Bowser recognizes that continuous education is vital in achieving career goals. The Executive Office of the Mayor has partnered with the Department of Employment Services, Office of Youth Programs (DOES) to pilot the Mayor’s Opportunity Scholarship. Through the Mayor’s Opportunity Scholarship, DOES seeks to support the post-secondary endeavors of participants in the Marion S. Barry Summer Youth Employment Program (MBSYEP).

Award Amount

The Mayor’s Opportunity Scholarship will provide a minimum of 25 scholarships in the amount of $2,000 each for young adults ages 18-24, who have successfully attained a high school diploma or equivalent and participated in 2017 MBSYEP and enrolled in post-secondary education or occupational skills training or the military.

Important Dates

  1. Scholarship Announcement: The Honorable Mayor Muriel Bowser announced the Mayor’s Opportunity Scholarship during a press conference on June 26, 2017.
  2. Application Deadline: The online application will be available beginning noon on July 11, 2017. The application deadline is noon on July 25, 2017.
  3. Application Review: The Scholarship Selection Committee will complete review of applications by 5:00 pm on July 28, 2017.
  4. Award Notification: Scholarship recipients will be notified by August 1 via email and phone using contact information provided on the application.
  5. Awards Ceremony: The scholarship recipients will be recognized during the MBSYEP closeout ceremony on or about August 4, 2017.
  6. Disbursement of Funds: The scholarship funds will be paid directly to an accredited post-secondary institution in the recipients’ name or directly to the recipient.

Eligibility Criteria

The Mayor’s Opportunity Scholarship Youth Scholars will be selected based on:

  1. Application content, career goals and interests
  2. Enrollment in an accredited post-secondary education institution
  3. Workforce Investment Council-approved in-demand occupations. Please visit link here for approved in demand occupations.
  4. Unmet financial need
  5. Successful participation in 2017 MBSYEP as characterized by active participation and attendance at the career preparation activities. Please note that your Host Employer Supervisor will be contacted for verification of participation and performance.
  6. Two Reference Letters are required.
  7. Commitment to serve as MBSYEP ambassadors. DOES reserve the right to use recipients’ picture or likeness for public recognition of program.
  8. Individuals entering the Military or ROTC requiring financial assistance who fall within this criteria

  3. Experience/ Knowledge obtained during MBSYEP 2017 including participation and attendance
  4. Personal Essay
  5. Applicable Supporting Documentation

Participation Agreement

The Mayor’s Opportunity Scholarship Scholars agree that the scholarship will be paid directly to the education or training institution or directly to the awardee, and will be used specifically for the purpose of educational expenses, college financial assistance, training and equipment cost, or support of post-secondary activities in accordance with the scholarship participation agreement.
