Poem in Celebration of the Inaugural of Muriel Bowser As Mayor of Washington, DC in the Month of January and the Year of 2015.
Be Brave, Lady!
The City sits in your hands,
nibbles at your feet,
smiles, cries in words of joy
smothering vagrant miseries.
Lights, evenings, dusk and all the phantoms
that challenge humility and the seats
of power defy the dreams
of magicians, and weary owners
who rent their smiles through
the grace of a woman
of peace that holds the muscle of wisdom.
There will be tears as well as smiles,
but when they come, kiss them
from your heart and render them helpless.
For you, Muriel Bowser, have been chosen
to lead this incredible place
of an incredible people at an incredible
time while the monsters of mayhem
We, the people, sing a Hallelujah
that dims shadows along the way
while they disappear beyond the setting sun.
For you, our Mayor, ARE the special one.
