Program Offers Comprehensive Career Exploration for District Youth Ages 9-13

(WASHINGTON, DC) – On Thursday, February 1, the Department of Employment Services (DOES) launched the application period for the 2024 Career-Ready Early Scholar program. District youth between the ages of 9 –13 are encouraged to apply online beginning at noon at summerjobs.dc.gov.

DOES’s Career-Ready Early Scholar program launched as an opportunity open to all middle school students who reside in the District to engage in comprehensive career exploration. This program provides a diverse, hands-on experience for District youth between the ages of 9 – 13 in the areas of:
  • Athletics
  • Business
  • Law and World/Global Affairs
  • Culinary Arts
  • Agricultural sciences
  • Engineering and Design
  • Language Arts
  • Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics
  • Social Science and Culture/Humanities
  • Visual and Performance Arts
  • Public Speaking

Exploring careers in middle school helps students understand what they are good at and what they are passionate about. This knowledge also helps them make informed decisions and sets them on a path to a successful future.

The Career-Ready Early Scholar Program stands as a beacon for our pre-teens as a comprehensive exploration of professions through hands-on experiences,” said DOES Director Dr. Unique Morris-Hughes. “This exciting program serves as a foundation built on the pillars of confidence, responsibility, and a profound appreciation for the true value of work.”
