Living Wage
Effective January 1, 2024, until June 30, 2024, the living wage rate is $17.05 per hour.
Effective July 1, 2024, the District’s Minimum Wage and Living Wage will increase to $17.50

Child Labor Requirements
Employers are generally subject to both state child labor laws and the federal child labor provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), 29 U.S.C. 212(c), and the FLSA regulations at 29 CFR Part 570. Certain provisions of District of Columbia law may be less restrictive than federal law, and employers covered by the FLSA that only follow a less restrictive provision of District of Columbia law will be in violation of federal law. Minimum Wage
Beginning July 1, 2024, the minimum wage in the District of Columbia will increase from $17.00 per hour to $17.50 per hour for all workers, regardless of the size of the employer.
As of July 1, 2024, the base minimum wage for tipped employees will increase from $8.00 per hour to $10.00. However, if an employee’s hourly tip earnings (averaged weekly) added to the base minimum wage do not equal the District’s full minimum wage, the employer must pay the difference.

Ban on Non-Compete Clauses
The District of Columbia bans non-compete agreements and policies for employees. As of January 1, 2024, the restriction on non-compete clauses applies to employees earning $154,200 or less and to medical specialists earning $257,000 or less.

The Office of Wage-Hour conducts compliance audits and works to recover unpaid wages for employees who have not been paid pursuant to DC wage laws, either administratively or through court action. Wage-Hour compliance involves ensuring adherence to the wage laws of the District of Columbia by holding employers accountable to the laws.
