They perform duties such as monitoring of health status, feeding, bathing, dressing, grooming, toileting, or ambulation of patients in a health or nursing facility. Responsibilities may include medication administration and other health-related tasks.

DC Registration Requirements

Certified nursing aides are governed by the DC Board of Nursing. To become certified as a certified nursing aide in DC, applicants must:

Prerequisites

Be at least 18 years old

Certifications

Receive a passing score on the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN) National Nurse Aide Assessment Program (NNAAP) or another examination approved by the Board

  • National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN) National Nurse Aide Assessment Program (NNAAP)
    • Successful completion of a CNA program or bridge to nurse aide program, within the past 24 months, approved by the Board or by a nursing board in the United States with standards determined by the Board OR,
    • Successful completion of a practical nursing or registered nursing “Fundamentals of Nursing” course with a minimum 40 hours clinical component OR,
    • Completion of a credentials evaluation by an organization recognized by the Board, indicating equivalent education as a registered nurse or licensed practical nurse for nurses educated outside of the United States

    • Pay $55 exam fee
  • Maintain certification with 24 hours of continuing education every two years
