Phlebotomy technicians perform specimen collection, specimen processing, and administrative tasks associated with the assessment of patients. Phlebotomy technicians serve as a liaison to hospital staff, patient care services, medical students, physicians, and others to ensure quality patient care.

Certifiying Bodies, Examinations, and Requirements

There are several examinations that can be taken to become a phlebotomy technician.

National Healthcare Association (NHA) Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT) Exam

  • Possess a high school diploma or GED/high school equivalency
  • Completed a phlebotomy technician training or education program within the last 5 years
  • Provide evidence that you have successfully performed a minimum of thirty (30) venipunctures and ten (10) capillary or finger sticks on live individuals
  • Pay $125 exam fee
  • Maintain certification with 10 hours of continuing education every 2 years

National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT) Certified Phlebotomy Technician (NCPT) Exam

  • Possess a high school diploma or GED/high school equivalency
  • Submit a copy of your phlebotomy technician diploma, certificate of completion, or official (signed) transcript with graduation date
  • Submit a Phlebotomy Technician Certification Critical Skill Competency form including proof of 25 venipunctures and 5 capillary punctures
  • Pay $119 exam fee
  • Maintain certification with 10 hours of continuing education every 2 years
